General Information
There are many different hazards and dangers that await the unaware
along our coastlines. This page provides some basic information on
what to look out for and what to do if you should come across them.
REMEMBER YOUR SAFETY AND THOSE AROUND YOU IS
PARAMOUNT
General Hazards
- Always remember to bag and bin your rubbish - glass, fishing
line and plastic are dangerous to both wildlife and other people.
- Never use inflatable rafts or toys unless suitably tethered to
the shore
- Beware of broken glass, syringes and other sharp objects that
may be obscured by sand
- Be aware of tides that can cut you off from the mainland
- Be aware of dangerous currents that may make it difficult to
swim back to shore, and never swim alone
- Always report vandalised life saving equipment such as throw
lines or lifebelts to the local council, ports authority or
Coastguard
Unidentified Objects, Explosives, Chemicals and Pyrotechnics
- If you find something that you think is explosive or contains
chemicals, Do not attempt to touch it or pick it up. Stand
well back and try to mark the site in some way.
- Make a note of what it looks like - what size is it, what
colour, what shape, any distinguishing markings or features e.g.
wires, pins, fins, is it visible or part buries?
- Do not use your mobile phone near any ordinance you find.
Explosives come in all shapes & sizes. If unsure leave well alone.
Retire to a safe distance and Dial 999 and ask for 'Coastguard'.
