Hazard Heroes

Every April, our Team provides a demonstration on water safety to Primary 7's from schools from all over South Ayrshire at the River Ayr beside Dampark.  In addition to the Coast|guard, there are lectures from Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, British Transport Police, Strathclyde Police.

Our message is simple:-

Reach - Throw - Go!

REACH - with a branch or stick. Hold on to something so you don't fall in too, or lie flat on your stomach. Always use a stick or something between you and the victim... you must be prepared to let it go if you are in danger of being pulled into the water by a panicking person.

THROW - a rescue float, part filled plastic bottle, football, Bouyancy Aid or anything that will float. If you have a rope or throw line, throw one end to the person in the water and remember to hold onto the other end so that you can pull them to safety.

GO - This is the last resort. Do not enter the water.  Stay safe and call for help. Dial 999 and ask for 'Coastguard'.

Who - What - Where - When!

WHO - Tell the operator who you are - your name and a contact telephone number

WHAT - Tell the operator what you have seen e.g. a person in the water in difficulty

WHERE - Tell the operator both your location and the location of the emergency e.g. The River Ayr near Dampark Stadium

WHEN - Tell the operator when you saw this happen
